Before you start

RaptorPass works with the Bitwarden app, which is free and published by Bitwarden, Inc. Your account must already exist: start with the "Join your vault" guide.

Your vault's address

It is in your welcome and access confirmed emails, and looks like this:

https://acme-k7f3q2m8xp.fr.raptorpass.eu

Don't use the app's account creation button: it would create an account with Bitwarden, unrelated to your vault.

Install the app

Choose the format for your distribution:

  1. Snap: sudo snap install bitwarden
  2. Flatpak: flatpak install flathub com.bitwarden.desktop
  3. AppImage: make the file executable, then run it. .deb and .rpm packages: install them with your distribution's package manager.

Link the app to your vault

This is the step that matters: without it, the app looks for your account at Bitwarden and doesn't find it. You only do it once per device.

  1. At the very bottom of the sign-in screen, click "Accessing: bitwarden.com".

  2. In the list, choose "self-hosted".

  3. In the "Server URL" field, paste your vault's address, then click "Save".

  4. The bottom of the screen now shows "self-hosted". Enter your email address, then click "Continue".

  5. Enter your master password.

Illustration: your screen may differ slightly.

Use the app day to day

  1. Find an account with the "Search vault" field, then use "Copy password" and paste it into the site or software.
  2. To fill in websites automatically, also install the browser extension.

Unlock without retyping your password

Open the "File" menu, then "Settings", and under "Security" turn on "Unlock with system authentication". Your system needs a polkit agent and a secrets service, such as GNOME Keyring. With Snap, first run: sudo snap connect bitwarden:password-manager-service. You will still need your master password from time to time, so keep it safe.

Start the app at login

In "Settings", turn on "Start automatically on login".

Troubleshooting

  • "Invalid credentials" or account not found: first check that the sign-in screen shows "self-hosted", not bitwarden.com. If not, go back to the "Link the app to your vault" step.
  • You can't see shared passwords: your administrator must confirm your access. You receive an email once that's done, and the items appear after a sync.
  • You don't know your vault's address: it is in your welcome and access confirmed emails. Your administrator can also give it to you.
  • Forgotten master password: nobody knows it and it cannot be recovered. Contact your administrator.
